Kerala: A destination for everyone
A host of accessible adventures await in God’s Own Country!
Have you ever dreamt of travelling to an exotic location, only to worry about accessibility issues?
Travelling should be an adventure for everyone, regardless of their physical abilities. We were thrilled to learn about Kerala’s incredible efforts to make travel accessible to all. This state, often referred to as God’s Own Country, is paving the way for inclusive tourism, ensuring that everyone can enjoy its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage. The state's tourism board is dedicated to creating an inclusive environment where every traveller can have a fulfilling experience. From scenic backwaters to bustling markets, Kerala ensures accessibility at every turn.
The ideal time to explore Kerala is from October to March, when the weather is cooler and drier. This period allows for safer travel conditions, avoiding the slippery surfaces of the monsoon season. Always book accommodations well in advance to secure accessible rooms, especially during the high season.
So where can you go? There’s picturesque Munnar, a hill station with wheelchair-accessible trails, ramps at key viewpoints, and accommodations with necessary facilities. If you’re a water baby, the backwaters and the sea beckon across the state. Laze on wheelchair friendly houseboats in Alleppey or Kumarakom, sailing down serene waters to enjoy the greenest vistas you could ever hope for. For the beach, head to Kovalam and Varkala and enjoy warm waters and stunning accessible resorts with views to die for. And if nature is your style, Thekaddy (home to Periyar National Park) and Wayanad are excellent choices with accessible safari vehicles and accessible treehouses and nature trails. And there’s more!
By improving accessibility, Kerala ensures that everyone regardless of their mobility needs can enjoy its diverse tourist attractions.
Some accessibility features across Kerala are:
Special houseboats: Experience Kerala’s serene backwaters on houseboats equipped with ramps and other accessible features.
Public transit: Kerala’s public transportation system includes low-floor buses, offers wheelchair-friendly options with ramps and dedicated spaces for the differently abled.
Car rentals: Companies like Zoomcar provide accessible vehicle rentals, ensuring a comfortable journey.
