Mumbai is a bustling, chaotic metropolis that’s brimming with life and energy 24x7. It’s social and a fun city to live in, but much of its urban landscape is unfriendly for people with mobility issues. Whether it’s in terms of public transport, or buildings without elevators, or simply uphill/downhill roads, Maximum City can be isolating for people on wheelchairs. But fret not. We’ve found a bunch of places you can visit in Mumbai even with mobility troubles.

      Gateway of India

This historic, century-old arch monument on Mumbai seafront is one of Maximum City’s most enduring visual symbols. Located in south Bombay, it was built to commemorate George V’s coronation as emperor of India. The Gateway of India is a popular tourist hotspot and well suited to visitors with limited mobility as well with wide ramps and pathways.

      Marine Drive

A long stretch of road from Nariman Point to Malabar Hill, Marine Drive is one of Mumbai’s prettiest areas. There’s a super-wide sidewalk where people go for walks, mill around with friends, and spend hours gazing into the sea. On clear days, you’ll be privy to a gorgeous cityscape rising across the waters. Enjoy tea and snacks available every few metres on the sidewalk under the shade of trees, with sea breeze for company.

      Juhu Beach

Perhaps Mumbai’s most well-known beach, Juhu Beach is also wheelchair friendly. While you may not be able to go up to the water, you can definitely have a picnic out there and watch the sun set into the distant horizon. Juhu Beach is popular among joggers, and if you’re lucky you might catch a Bollywood star or two zooming past you or exercising on the beach.

      Elephanta Caves

Several travel companies in Mumbai offer special tours to the spectacular Elephanta Caves for people with limited mobility. From the Gateway of India, you are seated on a ferry to Gharapuri island where there are people to lift your wheelchair up flights of stairs in a safe manner. There are also palanquins and dolis especially assigned for the elderly and people with limited mobility so that they can visit this ancient site and truly enjoy its architectural beauty upfront, instead of from home.
